しる【知る】

1 〔認識する･知識や情報などを持つ〕 know; be aware of…; learn; find out; become acquainted with….

●知る権利 the right to know; the right to free access to information

・己を知る know oneself

・知るべきことをすべて知る know all there is to know 《about…》

・それが確かだと知る know that that is certain

・よく知っている know well; be well aware 《of…》; have a good knowledge 《of…》; be well informed 《about…》; be (well) versed 《in…》

・この辺はよく知っている. I am well acquainted [familiar] with this neighborhood. | I know every inch of this neighborhood.

・彼は昔の飛行機については何でもよく知っている. He has a good knowledge of anything to do with early airplanes.

・そんなことぐらいだれでも[だれだって]知ってるよ. Everybody knows that [something as obvious as that]. <▲> that に強勢を置く.

・あの人の名前はだれでも知っている. That person's name is a household word.

・フランス語も多少知っている. She knows a bit of French, too.

・ドイツ語はほんの少ししか知りません. My German is very limited.

・私が知ってるわけないじゃない. How should I know? | I'm blest if I know.

・「ねえ, 三ノ輪ってとこ知ってる?」「うん, 聞いたことあるね」 “Say, have you heard of Minowa?”―“Sure, I've heard of it.”

・知る者は言わず, 言う者は知らず. The wise do not talk, and the talkative are not wise. | Still waters run deep. 【諺】

・その事件の事情を知る人物に会えた. I was able to meet the person who knows the circumstances of the incident.

2 〔理解する〕 understand; appreciate; know; 〔認める･悟る〕 recognize; realize; be awake [alive] to….

●健康のありがたみを知る appreciate the blessing of health

・問題の重要性を知る realize the importance of a problem

・自分の間違いを知る realize that one has made an error

・一を聞いて十を知る be quick to understand [《口》 on the uptake].

●彼女はクラシック音楽のことは何も知らない. She has no appreciation [understanding] of classical music.

・君は彼がどんな人間か知らないからそんなことが言えるんだ. You can say that because you don't realize what sort of a person he is.

・彼の顔を見て一部始終を知った. I understood the whole picture when I saw his face.

3 〔知り合いである〕 be acquainted 《with…》; know; 〔知り合いになる〕 become acquainted 《with…》; make sb's acquaintance; form an acquaintance 《with…》.

●知った顔に出会う come across a familiar face

・知らない顔 a strange [an unfamiliar] face; a stranger

・私の知っている男の子 a boy of my acquaintance

・私のよく知っている人 someone I know well [I'm well acquainted with]

・ああ, 彼のことなら昔からよく知っているよ. Oh yes, I've known him for years.

●どうしてあの人を知るようになったのですか. How did you come to know him?

・たいていは私の知らない人だった. Most of them were strangers to me.

4 〔気づく〕 find; see; notice; perceive; realize; sense; become [be] conscious [cognizant] of…; be alive [awake] to…; 〔発見する〕 find out; detect.

●危険を知る sense danger

・自分の欠点を知る become conscious of one's (own) shortcomings

・薄々知っている have an inkling 《of…》.

●そこで初めて道を間違えたことを知った. It was there that I first realized that I had taken the wrong road.

・そんなたくらみがあろうとはつゆ知らなかった. I was completely unaware of such a plot.

・その事実を家に帰って初めて知った. I didn't learn the fact until I got home.

・子を持って初めて親の恩を知った. I only realized how much I owed my parents when I had a child of my own.

・知らぬは亭主ばかりなり. The husband is always the last to find out [know].

・知らぬが仏. Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise. 【諺】 | Ignorance is bliss. | What you don't know won't [can't] hurt you.

5 〔推測する〕 infer; guess; gather 《from sb's talk》.

●彼の口ぶりから計画がうまく行っていないことを知った. From his remark I gathered that the plan was not working well.

・他は推(_お)して知るべし. The rest may easily be inferred [imagined].

6 〔感じる〕 feel; be conscious of…; be sensible of [to]…; be alive to….

●恥を知る feel shame; have a sense of honor

・恥を知れ. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. | Shame on you!

・彼は恥を知らない. He is shameless. | He is dead [lost] to shame.

●彼女は哀れみということをまったく知らない女だ. She's a woman who feels no pity whatsoever. | Pity is a word that has no place in her vocabulary.

・交通事故の恐ろしさをまざまざと知った. The horrors [horrible reality] of traffic accidents were brought home to me.

7 〔覚えている〕 remember; 〔なじみのある〕 be familiar 《with…》.

●知っている道 a familiar road; a road one remembers [recognizes]

・よく知っている飲食店 a restaurant I know well (because I go there often)

・知らない土地へ行く go to a strange land.

8 〔経験して覚える〕

●酒の味を知る know the taste of sake

・男[女]を知る know [have knowledge of] a man [woman].

9 〔関わる〕 be concerned with…; have to do with….

●それは僕の知ったことじゃない. I have nothing to do with the matter. | It's no concern of mine. | That's not my business. | 《俗》 To hell with that.

・そんなことおまえの知ったこっちゃない. It's none of your business.

・会社がどうなろうと俺の知ったことか. I don't give a damn what happens to the company.

・「そんなところに(車を)止めたら後の人が困るだろ」「知るもんか」 “If you park there the person parked behind you won't be able to get out.”―“Who cares?”

・そんなに食べてお腹が痛くなっても知りませんからね. If you get a tummy ache from eating so much, you won't get any sympathy from me.

・知らないからな. I won't be responsible for this.

・「しまった, 彼女との約束 5 時だったの忘れてた」「えー, ぼくは知らないからねー. 彼女今ごろかんかんだぜ」 “Darn! I forgot I promised to meet her at 5.”―“What!? Leave [Keep] me out of this. She must be madder than hell right now.”

知らない do not know; be ignorant of….

●まったく知らない know nothing at all [do not know a thing] 《about…》; have no idea whatsoever 《of…, how…》; do not know the first thing 《about…》

・その件に関しては一切知らない. I don't know a thing about the incident.

・何も知らないで unknowing(ly)

・高校に入るまで両親の苦労などろくに知らないで過ごしていた. Till I went to high school I had little idea of how much my parents were struggling.

・知らないでいる remain ignorant [in ignorance] 《of…》; be unaware of…

・知らないでいるほうが幸せということもある. Sometimes you'll be happier if you remain ignorant. | Sometimes you're better off not knowing.

・知らないふり[顔]をする ⇒しらんかお

・知らないと言う deny any knowledge 《of…》

・知らないと言い張る stoutly maintain one's ignorance (though one is not ignorant)

・そのことはだれも知らない. Nobody knows (about) that.

・この辺はまったく知らない. I don't know this area at all.

・知らないふりをしてもむだだ. It's no use feigning ignorance.

・この事実, まさか知らなかったとは言わせない. There's no way I'll [I'm not going to] let you say you're not aware of that fact.

・彼には人の知らない悲しみがあった. He nursed a secret sorrow.

・君のような立場の人が法律を知らないでは通らない. Somebody in your position can't be excused by pleading ignorance of the law.

・それ以上は知らない. I know nothing (about it) beyond that. | My knowledge (of it) ends there.

・あいつはそのことはてんで[まるっきり]知らないよ. He doesn't know the first thing about it.

・彼は本当に何も知らないと言っている. He says he doesn't have a thing to do with it.

・彼はまるでものを知らない. He doesn't know the most ordinary things. | He has no common sense at all.

知らない間に[知らぬ間に, 知らないうちに] before one knows about sth [is aware of sth]; without one's knowledge; 《take place》 insidiously.

●知らない間にその話は決まっていた. Before I knew about it the thing was decided.

・君のお父さんが知らない間にだれかがそれをこっそり持っていったのだろう. Somebody apparently walked off with it without your father knowing (about) it.

・知らないうちに寝てしまった. I fell asleep without realizing it.

知りたがる be curious to know; be curious [inquisitive] 《about…》.

●彼女は何でも知りたがる. She's curious [inquisitive] about everything.

知る[知っている]限り(では) as far as one knows.

●私の知っている限りでは as [so] far as I know; to (the best of) my knowledge

・僕の知っている限りではその計画は一時保留になったはずだ. As far as I know [To the best of my knowledge], that plan was put on hold.

・「あのあたりにインド料理の店はあったっけ」「私の知る限りでは一軒もなかったと思うな」 “Was there an Indian restaurant in that neighborhood?”―“Not that I know of―not a one.”
